Intensive Traditional Karate Workshop with Toru Shimoji Sensei

September 7th – 9th, 2018

 

 


Purpose: To provide insights into making Karate techniques effective using an innovative approach and a new way thinking about the Karate we all practice every day. 

 

Benefits: Using an interactive workshop format;

·       Discuss and practice human musculoskeletal system and Kinesiology and its application to karate techniques with special reference to BASICS;

·       Practice different ways to view kumite and Kata using Anatomy and Kinesiology concepts;

o    Improve efficiency in punching and kicking techniques;

o    Improve speed and power;

                                             

About Sensei: Shimoji, Toru Sensei, an Atlanta based Godan and direct line student, Nishiyama, Hidetaka Sensei has more than 35 years of experience (Funakoshi Shihan, founder of Shotokan Karate, was Godan).

·       Okinawan by birth, Shimoji Sensei grew up in Hawaii where he started Karate training;

·       Moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1982, began training directly under Nishiyama Sensei, one of the greatest of all Shotokan Karateka;

·       Member, Nishiyama Sensei’s teaching staff, managed and taught adult/children beginners/intermediates;

·       FIVE-time American Amateur Karate Federation (AAKF) US National Champion Kata (1982 – 1987);

·       Attained B. S. Degree in Kinesiology (study of the mechanics of body movements), UCLA,1991;

·       Returned to Okinawa, studied Goju-ryu Karate under Kuba, Yoshio Sensei and Shodo (Japanese Calligraphy);

·       Returned to the United States,1996, established Dojo in Atlanta, GA;

·       Kata Champion, 2000 Nishiyama Cup Moscow, Russia and Kata silver medalist at the 2002 ITKF World Championships in Belgrade, former Yugoslavia;

·       Formerly Technical Director, South Atlantic Region and President, AAKF 2009 to 2011;

·       Artist who creates figurative and organic sculptures (www.torushimoji.com).

 

Venue: Gymnasium, First Baptist Church of Grandview, 1416 Main St, Grandview, MO 64030

 

Date: Friday evening September 7 from 5:00pm to 8:30pm and all-day Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm, September 8, 2018.  Special practice by invitation Sunday morning, September 9, 2018 from 8:00am to 10:30am

 

Tuition: $100 when paid ON or BEFORE August 1, 2018, $125 thereafter. Minimum age, 12 years old.

 

NOTE: A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Grandview Assistance Program (GAP) and Single Mom KC.
